A  Gothic toy theatre, inspired by the danse macabre and Victorian cabinets of curiosities.

The Theatre of the Dance of Death draws inspiration from Victorian paper theatres , those entertainment objects that enlivened European salons in the 19th century. Here, the universe is revisited through the prism of romantic Gothic , memento mori , and cabinets of curiosities .

The richly ornamented sets, scarlet curtains, and skeletal figures dressed in red evoke the tradition of the danse macabre , an artistic motif that underscores the fragility of human life. Every element—from the Victorian proscenium to the movable figures—makes this miniature theatre a unique piece.

Made in France by the Figurart workshop, this collectible paper theater is carefully cut and printed before being assembled by hand. It can be displayed in a collector's showcase , integrated into a cabinet of curiosities , or even used as a Gothic-inspired decorative object in a library.

  • The work belongs to the tradition of memento mori , allegories of death that remind us of the vanity of earthly life. The danse macabre , a popular medieval artistic motif, is depicted with a Victorian touch, where the dancing figures of the dead and the living mingle in a symbolic procession. The whole evokes the spirit of cabinets of curiosities , where the strange and the marvelous met to inspire reflection and wonder.
