"to ride sidesaddle"

Side-saddle riding, also known as the "Amazonian style," is an equestrian discipline distinguished by its elegance and tradition. Originating in European equestrian culture, this riding method has its roots in ancient history, dating back to the Amazons, legendary warriors of ancient Greece.

The main characteristic of the sidesaddle position is the rider's posture, which involves balancing on the saddle with both legs on the same side of the horse, while the opposite leg is extended forward. This position provides a particularly stable and secure seat, allowing the rider to focus more on communicating with the horse and observing its movements.

Technically, the sidesaddle position requires precise control of body weight and the rider's aids. The reins are held in one hand, while the other hand remains free.

This discipline also requires good coordination between body aids, legs and hands, in order to obtain smooth transitions and harmonious movements of the horse.

Riding sidesaddle offers a unique experience for both rider and spectator, combining grace, tradition, and equestrian skill. Although less common in modern competitions, it remains a popular practice among enthusiasts passionate about equestrian history and classical style.

The Amazon's costume:

The sidesaddle rider's costume is designed to combine functionality and aesthetics, reflecting the historical heritage and practical requirements of this equestrian discipline. It typically consists of a short, fitted jacket with martial-inspired lines and a long skirt, offering freedom of movement and an elegant silhouette in the saddle. High leather boots provide adequate leg support and a secure grip in the stirrups, while leather gloves protect the rider's hands and offer a firm hold on the reins. Aesthetically, the colors and patterns of the jackets and skirts can vary, but are often coordinated to create visual harmony with the colors of the harness. Accessories such as hats and cravats complete the traditional sidesaddle outfit.
